How do you help a friend through a breakup?

My best friend just broke up with his girlfriend of 2 years.I wanna be supportive like if he wants to talk about it, but at the same time, I want to help him forget about it.How do you find that balance? What do you say or do?

tell him things like forget about her..or take him out so hes not at home thinking about her..if he wants to talk about her, he will bring it up.
