so i have a male Dwarf hamster, but i started thinking that he should have a partner while I'm at work or in classes. i asked every employee at the supermarket if it was okay to put at female and a male together, they all said yes, they also said age didn't matter. so i brought a female dwarf home. the actual problem is that i had bought my male a male friend...my mistake -.- at first they were okay but when i placed them in the cage, the next 2 min they got into a fight i returned him before anything else happened.. so i would like to give it a try with a girl, I'm okay if they breed threes no problem, but i want to know HOW do i know if they like each other??? please!!! i dint think i can sleep without knowing if they will be okay, if anyone out there have experiences with hamsters getting along please answer! thank you!
okay, its not your problem if i can take care of them or not. you do not know me financially. and there is no problem in stopping the breeding by giving one of my ham mys to a friend. i asked a question, and only one was answered still with an insult. i asked if you have had any experience with hamsters getting along. and yes, in the stores they are together in one giant tank for the smart person that said it didn't. i sure could take care of a hamster, seems like all YOU guys only rub off your immaturity to others.
you do know that hamsters breed CONSTANTLY? You sound like you shouldn't even own a hamster sorry but you sound immature
ADD they give birth to 8 at a time (mostly) and are pregnant for a month! We are TRYING TO SAVE YOUR PETS! But you WON'T listen to use because your immature. YOU asked advise WE answered it don't get mad we're trying to help YOU AND YOUR PETS
I assure you male hammers are quiet happy on their own. DO NOT MIX A MALE AND FEMALE. They will breed and the mother will eat her babies, which is painful for the babies. If they do survive I doubt you'll be able to constantly find homes for their pups.
I had a male Rob dwarf hamster and got a female for him and he died that night so if you love your hamster then you should definitely not get a female for him, he really doesn't need it.
I would advise against getting another hamster. Unlike other rodents, hamsters are fine by themselves and wont become depressed from lack of interaction. If you have ever been to Pet-smart or Pet-co you probably would have noticed that all of the hamsters are alone in their tank. Hamsters are solitary by nature.
Ok it seems you did not do your home work before getting your pet. Hamsters are solitary animals and NEED to be kept by them self's. Even if they are dwarfs they can still fight a lot. Now males can be even more aggressive towards other hamsters so you really can't get another hamster to be in the same cage. The other big problem is that they will breed so much. A hamster can get pregnant every 4 days. They are pregnant for 16- 30 days depending on the hamster. Right after birth the hamster can get pregnant again. By the end of the year the hamster and their off springs (if none die) could be easily over 100 hamsters. Also the hamsters could harm each other. Hundreds off hamsters each year die from stupid owners letting them breed and they die in birth. So it does not matter if you are OK with it or not. Think about your pets for once in your life because it sounds like you WANT to kill them!!!
You should never keep a male and female together unless they are both quite young as the female will drive the male away when she has pups. The stress of having a male hamster nearby will possible cause her to destroy the pups.
You could try putting them together but as soon as the female gets pregnant, move the male out and put him in a separate cage.
