"Love the one your with"really terrible love advice?

I remember this song from my youth from Stills and Nash w/ the lyrics"And if you cant be with the one you love, love the one your with"! That seems like REALLY crappy advice to me. Simplifying it a bit, it means to me: Settle. If you can't get that one amazing, fun, beautiful person that you really are interested in... just bang the next pretty (or perhaps not so pretty) face that comes along. This philosophy seems capricious, impulsive and potentially very hurtful to both parties involved. I actually don't know much about the guy who made song, so perhaps there's a deeper meaning. Please let me know what you think.Man, I didn't know it was about adultery... but now that I do... it still seems like a kind of bogus way to live your life. BTW, what is the"target audience", not meant sarcastically.

It's about adultery, dude. The song was written for swingers. Just because you're not the target audience, don't harsh the song.
